Layout and center punch at marks
Fuller 1/2" diameter 1/4" and
3/8" deep, on the marks.
Upset the end, at an angle.
Leave it slightly domed and fat.
Hang the upset end over
the edge of the anvil and
with the fullers down,
hammer the slope.
Draw out the reigns
Forge a bending fork from 8" of 1/2" round steel. With fork in vise
bend the 1st fuller area. The area marked must be good and hot.
Dip the upset area in the slack tub and pour water on the back
fuller section to isolate the heat. Repeat for the 2nd bend.
Offset the jaw from the centerline
of the reins. A piece 1/2" X 1" bent
over in the hardie will work fine.
Split the jaws with a hot cut.

Spread the split with set hammer
or block of steel.

Align tongs, mark, drill and rivet.

Using a piece of 1/2" round, heat and align the jaws
and reins.

For tongs to hold 1/2" iron or larger, start with 5/16
or 3/8" stock.
